Acupuncture Therapy Controls Acne

from: Oze Parrot

The most common of all skin complaints is acne, and approximately 85 percent of the world's population suffer from the condition at some stage during their life. According to reports, there are about seventeen million people in the United States that have the disease. Acne is not contagious, is not confined to adolescents and is not considered to be a serious health matter. The condition affects people of any age, race or color and is considered to be genetically transmitted.

Basically, acne outbreaks are thought to be caused by an increased production of oil in the skin's oil glands, which may be brought about by a change in hormone levels. Follicles are the passages that connect the oil glands to the skin pores, and owing to the increased production of oil, they can become blocked with debris, which causes trapped bacteria to form pimples.

Most common acne outbreaks occur on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Early treatment of an outbreak is highly recommended in order to avoid permanent scarring. Your dermatologist may prescribe tabs, a lotion, a tonic or a combination of these meds in order to control the condition.

There are many, over the counter, treatments that are freely available to people who are suffering from acne, but a natural therapy that has proven to be the most effective in controlling hormone levels is acupuncture. This ancient Chinese therapy has been used for many thousands of years to effectively treat all kinds of injuries, pain and disease, and has been adopted by the modern world, where the practice has grown exponentially.

Traditional Chinese medicine views the body as a whole, so, acupuncturists treat the whole person rather than a disease, and therefore, attempt to treat the root cause of the problem, rather than by simply relieving the symptoms.

Initially, an experienced acupuncturist will conduct a comprehensive consultation session, where patients will be asked questions about their condition. A minor physical exam will also be conducted at this stage. The interview, will enable the practitioner to determine what type of acne exists and the extent of it's development, and therefore the best course of action to be taken to resolve the issue.

There are many acu-points on the body that can be used to treat various disorders and several of these points are on the ear. Auricular acupuncture is the practice of needling acu-points on the ear, and has proven to be successful in balancing the body's hormone system, which helps to clear up acne outbreaks.

In conjunction with acupuncture therapy, your practitioner may also recommend some herbal medicines or teas to be taken throughout the course of treatment. Positive results from the therapy will be felt almost immediately, and a marked improvement in skin condition will be apparent in about four weeks. Continued treatment is advised, as acne outbreaks may persist in some people until they are well into their thirties or forties.
