How To Conquer The Frustration Of Understanding Guitar Chords For The Beginner
While there are no real shortcuts, there are a couple of useful strategies that you can use to learn beginner guitar chords, starting today.
Lets assume that you have a chart of chords and that you already have an understanding of how to play the guitar, read a diagram and put your fingers on the fretboard and strings effectively. Your next step would not be to try to master every chord that is on the chart as soon as possible.
A better approach would be to start with only two to three easy to play guitar chords. These should preferably be inside the same key or family. A key is a group of associated chords or a "family" that musicians use when writing songs.
Many guitar training methods will start a novice out using the key of A. Three chords from this family are "A" "D" and "E".
With these three chords a person is able to play countless easy guitar songs.
Use one chord at a time and master the finger placement. Starting with the "A". Practice holding your fingers down on the chord and lifting them up and reposition them again many times. Do this as much as is comfortable for you. Don't be concerned about strumming at this point. This is called building "muscle memory".
Then try strumming. Strum all the strings that are supposed to be played for that chord. You may hear muted or buzzing sounds from the strings. If this happens, keep your fingers holding down the correct strings and try playing each string one at a time, paying attention to hear that a decent sound is coming from each string. Try rocking your finger back and forth on each string until you get a clear sound.
When ever you fully feel comfortable with your first chord = "A", try doing the same procedure for the subsequent one. Practice switching between chords in a similar fashion. Place your fingers for "A" and lift and reposition your fingers for "D", and back to "A". Try repeating this several times. Next you can add "E" to the mix. Start out with the A, to the D to the E and continue to keep looping this pattern or progression.
Don't get frustrated if your not progressing as fast as you would like. After some time and practice you will be strumming and have the ability to switch between chords easily.
